270 Conversations Starters for Couples

You and your handsome husband plan a date night at a romantic restaurant. You agree not to talk about the kids because it’s couple time. You arrive and get seated at a table. You tell each other about your days and then – crickets. You look at each other and smile. You may giggle at the awkwardness of the moment, but you can’t think of a single thing to say.

Please tell me that this has happened to someone else, because it happens to Joe and me ALL THE TIME. Sometimes I think we had more to talk about when we were dating than we do now – and we probably did. If you think about it, when you’re dating, you likely see your beloved only every couple of days, so you have lots to fill him in on. Now, he lives with you and sees your junk all the time, and it feels like he’s heard it all before.

What you need are some conversation starters, some questions designed to provoke easy and effortless conversations between the two of you.

Some of my conversation starters are breezy and light, some are everyday stuff, and some will expose the really deep, emotional, and vulnerable spots in your heart. They’re all good, and I suspect they will all (or almost all) spark a good conversation or debate between you and your handsome husband.

I’ve formatted the topics onto cards. I recommend that you print them on cardstock, laminate if desired (though not necessary; I didn’t), and stick them in a zippered bag in your purse. (Bag could be a simple plastic sandwich bag or something like a small fabric makeup bag.) This way, you’ll always be able to grab a card or four when you need them.
